The Little Sisters of the Poor was founded on a cold winter night of December 1839 when Jeanne Jugan, a 47 year-old French peasant, was moved by the plight of a dying old lady. Jeanne carried the dying old lady home and cared for her.
Since that night, there have been more than 17,000 Little Sisters in 30 countries spread over the 5 continents. The Little Sisters cared for the aged poor with love and respect regardless of race or religion from the attic in St. Servan, Brittanny, France to the four corners of the world. The Little Sisters come to Asia in 1882. They began their work in Calcutta and later established a Home in Singapore in 1935. The first Home was established in Derbyshire Road with 12 elderly folks. They provide housing, food, clothing and laundry, medical and related services. The Sisters are known for the care of the dying. They were there day and night to provide care and attention, not sparing anything to assure the dying person the comfort and peace before they meet their Creator. |
